Sequoyah Students Take Art Honors

Three Sequoyah Schools students won honors for their work in the Five Civilized Tribes Museum Student Art Show.

“I am just really glad that we were able to get some kids involved with this show this year,” said Brandi Adair, Sequoyah Schools art teacher.

Christie Tiger, eighth grade, won first place for her painting, titled “Valentine’s Day Stomp Dance ’08.” Her painting also won the Frances Rosser Brown Award. This award is given to the student whose artwork the judges believe best portrays the history or culture of the Five Civilized Tribes.

Kyle Woods, senior, won first place in the basketry division for his “Double Walled Basket.”

Donnita Severs, senior, took home second in the basketry division for her “Berry Basket.”

Other Sequoyah Schools students who entered the art show were Tafy Coachman, Kaylae Sourjohn and Christopher Little.

Sequoyah has had an award winner in this art show in the past. Shawn Budder earned honorable mention for an art piece he entered a few years ago.

Sequoyah Schools offers students the option to take fine arts classes in Art I, Art II, Art III, Art IV, and Native American art. In the fall of 2008, Sequoyah will expand fine arts classes to include drama, which is now offered in the after-school program.

Adair expects her young artists to win a few more honors before the school year is over.

“We have several more shows that we are awaiting results for,” Adair said. “I suspect that Sequoyah will have another winner or two.”
